Have you used a piece of furniture in your home today?
If you’re like most people, you have used your dining table and dishes, your dresser, and even your bed without giving it much thought. (Ok, maybe you thought about the bed and how comfy it was before you got up this morning). But imagine you didn’t have these items. Where would you put your clothes? Where would you sit to have dinner with your family? What would you eat off of? Where would you sleep?
Furniture is a luxury the 27,000+ people living in poverty in Harford County often cannot afford
So what is the 610 Building Campaign?!
The 610 Building Campaign is a focused effort to raise $61,085 in 61 days to FULLY FUND our new
5,000 sqft space at 610 Towne Center Drive in Joppa for the next TWO YEARS!
Why a new building?
The Fresh Start Furniture Program in partnership with the furniture ministry at Bel Air United Methodist Church has been operating out of 800 sqft of space in an old mansion fondly known at The Homestead on the back of the church’s property. It has served us well in terms of costs, but the confining space has made operating efficiently nearly impossible. We have found a much greater need in Harford County then our current location has the capacity to serve.
Wait! $61,085 for two years?! That seems like a great deal!
Yes it is! The average cost per square foot of warehouse space in Harford County is $8-$10 which doesn’t include costs such as heat & electricity, water, insurance, security, or general operating expenses.
So how did you get such a good price?
The owners of the property have graciously offered to donate our first year of occupancy in-kind with the exception of operating costs. They believe in our mission and the important work we are doing in the community. They have chosen to partner with us in helping to stabilize families in transition and we are exceedingly grateful they have done so in such a big way!
What are your future plans for the building?
We believe that this space will sufficiently meet our needs and the needs of the community for some time to come. We have currently agreed to a three year lease with the option to purchase at the end of our first year. During that time, our leadership will review our current operations and assess our future needs to determine our permanency.
